Frequently Asked Q's

Do we offer private online/virtual lessons?

Yes, weekly virtual lessons are $120/month due on the first of each month.

Do we teach private lessons?

Yes,  weekly private lessons are $120/month and workbooks are included. Payment is due on the first of each month. We do not offer makeup lessons or refunds for cancelled lessons.

For piano lessons, we use a combination curriculum of Piano Adventures and Alfred, so theory is woven into every lesson. Fun, easy, familiar songs are added as the student progresses. Although we don't teach Suzuki, the effectiveness of the immersion method is incorporated into the lessons.

Guitar and Ukulele instruction is structured around the type of instrument each individual student wants to explore and their musical goals.

How should I pay for the group class?

Unless otherwise posted, each session is $200 and runs for 7 or 8 weeks depending on the school calendar.  Enrollment is accepted on a first come basis.  Payment must be received along with the sign up form in order to guarantee a spot for your student.  Late payment fee is $20. Payment options are provided at the bottom of the main page on this website.  Unfortunately, we are no longer able to offer the scholarship/hardship discount.  We do still have the sibling discount.

We accept Venmo @YellowJacket831, PayPal and checks to Yellow Jacket Studio.  Our mailing address is 750 Bay Avenue #5201, Capitola CA 95010

Do we offer a sibling discount for the group music classes?

Yes, first student is full price. Second student is half off.

What kind of ukulele should I purchase?

We really like Luna & Kala, but Hola and Donner brands also stay in tune well.  Your student will need a soprano, concert or tenor model (not baritone).  Soprano is the smallest, then concert, tenor is the largest of the three. Students tend to outgrow their soprano ukuleles quickly so you may want to start with a concert model.  Any of the local music stores can get you setup.  For online options... Musicians Friend, Sweetwater and  Amazon offer a good selection.

Can my student begin a class mid-session?

Yes, but please confirm availability with us first in case the class is already full.   No walk-ins.  The music lessons are tailored to each student individually so beginners will not feel as if they are falling behind the other students.  Returning students will not have to start back at the beginning of the first workbook, but will be able to continue advancing from where they left off.

What is the advantage of a group music class?

Small group music classes that incorporate individual attention, providing a collaborative learning environment for multiple students while still offering focused one-on-one instruction time. These lessons feature interactive activities, games, shared learning, and a mix of individual and peer interaction to build a strong musical foundation in a fun, social, and engaging way for beginners.

Key Aspects of Group Private Piano Lessons

  • Small Class Sizes:These lessons typically involve a few students, often beginners of similar age and skill level.
  • Combination of Activities:Students rotate through various carefully planned activities that address different musical concepts, techniques, and fine motor skills through a multi-modal approach.
  • One-on-One Time:Despite the group setting, a portion of each lesson is dedicated to one-on-one instruction with the teacher to provide personalized feedback and address individual needs.
  • Collaborative Learning:Students learn from and with their peers, creating a supportive and motivational atmosphere where they can create music together.
  • Engagement:Interactive games, props, and group counting help keep students engaged and motivated, making learning fun and social.
  • Structured Format:Lessons often include group warm-ups, technique exercises, and working on shared songs, with stations for individual practice activities.

Benefits

  • Social Interaction: Students benefit from interacting and collaborating with peers.
  • Motivation: A group setting can be highly motivating for beginners.
  • Cost-Effective: They offer a lower tuition cost compared to private lessons, making musical education more accessible.
  • Foundation Building: The multi-modal approach helps young beginners develop a strong musical foundation and builds confidence.

Isn't yellow jacket one word? :D

The insect, yes.  However, the year we started our business was extremely rainy so the name was inspired by my wife's favorite rain coat that she wore almost everyday!  I was sitting in our living room with our IT guy trying to come up with a catchy business name when we saw Shannan out in the yard wearing her... Yellow Jacket.  :D
